What is an appropriate age to buy bunkbeds for a boy?
My son is 2 and I know it’s too early now, but there is the cutest loft bed at rooms 2 go that isn’t as high off the ground as a bunk bed and it would save alot on storage space. It has a tent and shelves. What is a good age to get this type of bed for him?
The manufacturer’s usually recommend 6 years old. Personally I am waiting until my sons are 5 & 3. And they will not be allowed in there room unless they are going to bed…to prevent any accidents. (they have a playroom with all there toys.)
Once he can be awake enough right after sleep to get down a ladder or realize the ground isn’t right below him. I’d guess 4 or so? I think my 5 yr. old could have handled it at 4, but I’m not sure about 3.

It is not too early now for bunk beds…he could sleep on the bottom bunk until he’s old enough to go up top. We got our son’s bunk beds when he was 2.5 yrs…now he’s 4.5 yrs – he’s on top and his 18 month old bro is on the bottom…the 6 week old is in the ‘baby’ room now.

My nephew is 2 1/2 & he has bunk beds with his sister who is 4 1/2. He sleeps on the bottom. No problems so far.

I would say around age 4, that was when we got bunk beds for our twins. They are 13 now and still have bunk beds. As long as it has the side rails (on both sides is best) then he should be fine. I mainly say 4 because then he has better gross motor skills for climbing up and down the later without getting hurt and is old enough to be more responsible when it comes to playing rough on the bed.

I read that you shouldn’t put them in the top bunk until they’re 4. But I think it depends on your child, and how safe you think they’ll be.

I think that age is fine, as long as he’s a sturdy little guy and knows how to climb stairs well! We have a huge slide out back with a ladder up to a fort, my little 18 month day care children climb that ladder!! plus you could put a rail on the side if it doesn’t already have one.

i decided against bunks for my 6- and 4-year-olds even though we could really use the space… partly because i also have a 2-year-old in the house, partly because my other kids occasionally sleepwalk (ouch), and mostly because i’m afraid they’d use it as a launching pad for daring feats of gymnastics during the day…. leaving my active kids in bunks overnight would seem rather like leaving them unsupervised at the playground. i think it depends on your son’s personality. is he a climber/ daredevil? then skip it. if not, late 3s or 4s ought to be okay.
